It was with deep sadness that I learned yesterday of the death of Elisabeth Sladen to cancer aged only 63, more popularly known as Sarah Jane Smith from the long running BBC Television series Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures. Sladen had joined the series in 1973 and quickly became the most popular ever companion of the Doctor, a status that endures to this day amongst fans and writers of the show. She was a friend to no less than seven of the eleven TARDIS thieves.

As Sarah Jane she was impossibly pretty, stylish, practical and intelligent but full of fun and this was always reflected in her wardrobe. Whether she was hanging from a scaffold or running around with a huge spider stuck to her back she was always impeccably turned out. I think what makes all the Doctor's companions' styling special is that although they are always of the time, their clothing always compliments their personalities and as such they never look like clothes horses and no one represented this more than Sarah Jane.

Denim jeans, chambray camisole and a short sleeved plaid shirt typical of her practicality edged with a hint of prettiness.

I love this bandana headscarf, such a simple way of keeping your hair tidy when escaping from a creepy disembodied hand trying to maul you.

She even managed to look cool in disastrous '80s spin-off K9 And Company by keeping it neat in a grey tweed trouser suit with a white Peter Pan collar and cute headband.

Elisabeth was one of the few women in television that seemed happy to grow older gracefully retaining her natural beauty whilst not becoming dowdy. This was shown in the recent Sarah Jane Adventures, how many other 60 year old women do you know who could carry off a horizontal striped jersey cling dress, mauve tights and knee boots? Sladen did and what's more she looked elegant doing it, even chasing after various monsters and jumping in and out of her Mini Cooper. Hope for us in the future possibly?

And she also seemed to have a quality of youth that not many people retain as they go through life. The Manchester Vintage Fair

'The Vintage Fair' is the UK's leading vintage fair bringing affordable and quality vintage items to various locations across the country. The Whitworth welcomed stalls from Manchester based vintage reworked jeweller, Yellow Squirrell, Didsbury hidden hoarders gem, In all her Finery, Killed by Rose, grunge meets glamour History's Attic, reworked timeless vintage finds and extravagantly theatrical cakes from Cupcake Palace . Are just a few of the treasure hunters who presented their wondorous wares to the Whitworth.

Saturday 30th October 2010, The Vintage Fair adorned the green leaf papered walls of the Whitworth art gallery with stalls of antique décor, cupcake tea party, retro hair saloon, grandmother's shoes and libraries of embellished 1920's evening couture and vintage warmers. The dusky smell of worn woollen jumpers amidst the collection of past thrifts and treasures were quickly grasped by the bustling pigeon eyed collectors. It recalled the hustle of a Victorian market albeit the flush of vintage clothes contrasted to the tough bartering of a less consumerist age.
I was photographer and promoter on the day of the fair. I was given the task of capturing members of the public (which then became subsequent attendees of the fair) who were adorning vintage clothing or inspired looks of a more independently stylish era.
It was refreshing to see so many people attending a vintage fair, showcasing individual contemporary styles by patch-working elements of nostalgia's past in their outfit.
People were photograped that represented vintage styles that expressed their individuality. It is subtly political to wear clothes that distinguish individuals, a gentle petition against the mainstream conforms of mass produced fashion by not looking like everyone else.
Purchasing and wearing vintage clothes is like passing on a patchwork quilt, you are reworking and reliving stories of the past wearers in your contemporary footsteps. My purchases included a few essential accessories; a tweed clasp purse, dainty 1950's caricature postcards and seventies floral bucket. Less may be more, but surely having more to play with is more fun.

The Sheffield Vintage Fair

Our second Sheffield fair in our new venue was another huge success. The sun was shining as hundreds of you streamed into The Circle to snap up some bargains! Accompanied by classic vintage tunes and scrumptious cupcakes, there was some serious shopping to be done!

The Vintage hair salon was in full swing, transforming everyday hair into glorious 40s curls and waves. A personal favourite of ours was this beautiful beehive which certainly stood out from the crowd! Also attracting our attention were these yummy cupcakes, which were a sell-out once again.

A fair find was this Vintage Guns'n'Roses Tee, customised by the stall owner into a more up to date vest and perfect with patterned leggings and a denim jacket.

Regular Sheffield stall holders Alice Takes a Trip featured their trademark flouncy bows on everything from tops to bags to broaches. These bags were reduced especially for the fair to a mere £10

A personal fair favourite was this exquisite sequin jacket. Matched with a little black dress and ankle boots, this jacket is ideal evening wear with piles of gold jewellery and red lipstick.

The Vintage Fair Leicester

On the 23rd of October the Vintage Fair came to Leicester at the Auditorium next to the market place. The venue was large, and what was nice about it, is the different levels and the ability to see the fair as a whole. Cupcakes and the songs like 'If I knew you were coming, I'd have baked a cake' provided the perfect atmosphere for Vintage shopping galore.

Lily Vintage offered Leicester buyers a sale!

Visitors were given an opportunity to enjoy retro hair and make-up styling. By using authentic vintage cosmetics from Besame, amazing looks were recreated. We don't know how girls in the 50's did this every day! We're very jealous of their expertise, the glamourous pinned curls were the perfect compliment to any outfit purchased on the day.
The make up used is rather exclusive, as it's mainly sold in the USA. We loved the lipsticks, which were shaped like minaiture golden bullets. Also, most of the pieces are packaged in little velvet pouches, making a chic addition to any make up bag. We reccomend these products to anyone who wants to achieve the look of a silver screen starlett, particularly those with the complexion of an english rose, as the shades were perfect for this skintone unlike many of today's cosmetics, which are for the more tanned skins amongst us.

Our 'Get snapped here' stand went mobile for Leicester as we were constantly seeing people dressed with a Vintage advantage! However we have to say, the boys in Leicester seemed to have the most outstanding style, which was a pleasant suprise. But here are a few of the people who stood out that we captured:

Captured whilst filling in our consent form, Joshua Moore has a distinct Vintage style definately worth photographing! We found him looking at 1950s varsity jackets, as he captures the rock and roll style perfectly with converse, rolled up jeans and slicked back hair. His outfit embodies american rockabilly and he admires Rujous Hound for his style. Joshua , at 19, clearly loves clothes, but he tells us he's also a stripper!

British heritage is incorporated with tweed coats and woolen v-neck jumpers. 49 year old, Gary Hill, wears a charity shop coat to complete his 40's style look. Bentie wooster is his style muse and he dances the Lindy Hop in his spare time!

It's clear from his outfit, Robert Ward likes Vintage. He wears a vintage velvet blazer over a vintage tee (which he tells us he spilt coffee on earlier, very well disguised Robert). He admires the style of Anythony Eden and once he had goat curry.

Josh Watters claims he admires 'no-ones' style but manages to create a look with an effortless edge. He wears baggy jeans teamed with the classic Dr Martens and a Hockey shirt thrown over the top. We spotted the 18 year old from afar as the sports top has bright colours contrasting with his bottom half.

Tanya, wears a beautiful 70's maxi, her long hair and long dress accentuate her elegance. She showcases her pride in her own vintage store, Spanky Vintage who held a stand at The Vintage Fair.

Colourful vintage inspired head-tied bows, and pretty pussy bow blouses contrast with sturdy boots of Vintage classics: Dr Matens and brogues. The best friends wear a mixture of the best high street and vintage has to offer, admiring the style of Paloma Faith.

Rowen Marlowe. at 15, wears family vintage heirlooms from her grandparents. She tells The Vintage Fair 'It's all about the fashion!' as she admires the quirkiness of Vivienne Westwood.

Kate Griffiths throws over this sweet 1950s Vintage fair day dress over a simple white t-shirt to create a simply beautiful summer look. She tells us she sews for a living which we think is extremely lucky- teach us!

At 26, Candice Hawitt uses a vintage cardigan thrown over new striped tights, telling use she loves the 'mish mash' of old and new. She admires the style of Gwen Stefani and loves snowboarding in her spare time.

Art and design student, Nicola Morris wears this beautiful polka dot dress from The Vintage Fair. The pink dress accentuates an hourglass figure with the vital mesh underneath providing the perfect silhouette.

After getting their 40's inspired hair done by La Kreux at the Vintage Fair, we grabbed Joanne Clawley and Nartalie Carey who have showcased their style from up North. We're told the scarf was a bargain from Oxfam and they use the vintage style hair to complete their look.

Scott Howard learnt that he was infact cool when we snapped him working this leaf-green thin leather jacket from the Vintage Fair, to create a rockstar vintage look. He admits that being a musician could be considered as cool, being inspired by 60's blues he plays the guitar as well as the saxophone.

Sally Price, who was happy to announce that she got married a couple of weeks ago, came along to The Vintage Fair to snag some bargains! This icy winter fur coat clinches Sally in at the waist and provides the perfect shield from the cold weather.

Katie Smith exclaimed to us the simple fact 'I like clothes!', she reworks this beautiful black sparkly top from The Vintage Fair, into a modern and delicate look. Paired with rough fraying denim shorts and simple black tights, the top adds a bit of sparkle to staple garments.

OUR FAVOURITE STORE - SEVEN SISTERS

James, Georgina and Gina started up selling Vintage on ebay, buying the best from car boots to sell on to fans of the hand-picked garments. They tell us their style is simply 'their own thing' we love their cut off graphic t-shirts and the use of tights. Clunky boots and bum bags finally look cool with these 17 year olds. The vintage jumpers were piled on a carpet and increasingly was drawing attention. We felt the store represented everyday items which vintage lovers would wear day in day out.

The VIntage Fair Birmingham

Amongst the vintage area of the custard factory, the Birmingham Vintage Fair was hosted in a interesting bright green building which inside the public shopped amongst beautiful arches and one-off vintage items.

Inside, brands eagerly set up to reveal an exquisite range of the best vintage items

The layout was beneficial towards us as we could grab people to get snapped as they walked in as well as when they tried on they're purchased treasures.

It appeared that Birmingham's fashionistas had stylish friends or partners that kept their look strong and significant. Here are the people who seemed most fashion aware:

THE COUPLES

Luke and Danni use Vintage to their advantage. Whilst Luke is inspired by Russel Brand and Austen Powers to create a 70s retro vibe, Danni uses Vintage items to jazz up the outfit.

Ben Brown and Becki Turner loves vintage. Becki is inspired by Alexa Chung and uses a Vintage blazer and shoes to create a preppy vintage style. Her preppy style runs into teaching, if only it was fashion.

THE FRIENDS

Band members of 'The Lovetts', Eva Browning and Abi Copson show true 60s chic at only 16. Red lips and lace blouses offer the perfect combination to enhance their vintage style which is inspired by Pattie Boyl and Audrey Hepburn.

Joy McDermot and Emma Lloyd use red to their advantage to offer a bright edge to muted colours. Emma tells The Vintage Fair that the key item to her outfit is her red Beret which adds a 1940s touch to her picturesque vintage style.

Winter warmth is displayed through vintage knitted throw-ons and woolly tights. At 15, Louisa Haywood and Annice Boparai uses vintage to their advantage, as Louisa chooses vintage jumper regardless of the fact she can actually knit and Annice mashes the crisp buttoned up vintage shirt with a skirt from New York. Louisa prefers 80s style whilst Annice stays true to the 60s claiming she wears nail varnish 'everyday'.

Rosie Foden & Sam Higginson correspond to their own individual outfits despite being drastically different. Monochrome matching with garments highlights the classic vintage camera. Whereas obscure colours in 80s tribal-esque patterns are revived through a shirt underneath and legs eleven. Sam's style is inspired by Nick Grimshaw and Ollie Murs whereas Rosie, who's lived in Canada, admires Alexa Chung's look.

5 fashionable friends all share an chic elegant style. We love their sophisticated use of this seasons prime colour; camel. The muted colours help focus on the vast array of ladylike silhouettes. As these girls make the trouser heel combo unbelievably fashion-forward and feminine.

THE INDIVIDUALISTS

Vintage is given a luxurious style by the use of modern denim with a touch of a real weasel scarf. At only 16, Tom Mason (photographed above) designed the 'YSL' replica print was made by himself.

Top-heavy garments protects Hayley from the cold of a British winter, she keeps the colours earthy to contrast with her hair and skin tone to create an even more striking look.

Stephanie Green shows that body con skirts are unlikely to go out of fashion. The pale colours and floral printed blouse make her look feminine juxtaposing with the boyish boots. She describes her outfit as 'granny/geekchic' which is clear through her vintage glasses and head-tied bow. She admires the style of Lady Gaga and her nan, using the best of the past and the futuristic vibe to create a whole new look.

James Blincox's individual style is inspired by Patrick Wolf which is clear in his range of textures that he finds within Vintage. Even though James is a veggie, he wears real fur scarf which is an unusual contradiction.

British pride is exhibited by the United Kingdom flag tshirt under a military style coat. Red lips of the 40s reminds us of the collectiveness of the home front in the war. The corporal jacket and boots are both vintage which she mixes to the individual necklace bought from Camden Market. She admires an elcetic range of styles from boyish Agnes Deyn to the classic feminine icon Audrey Hepburn. She tells us she's 'obsessed' with nautical tattoos, and has a military anchor and swallow already.

Warmth and style are joined with the latest trends for Autumn/Winter as the parka and the return of vintage kitten heels are reworked by Siobhan Turner. The mix of textures with the knitted jumper nipped in at the waist contrasting with modern denim shorts makes this outfit the perfect twist on the trends. She tells us how she loves fashion and music (especially the Arctic Monkeys) and her outfit is 'Just Bomey (me)'.

At only 15 youth, Tara Cox, uses frayed denim shorts and a graphic vintage tee and thrown over large-knit winter cardigan.We love Tara's use of heavy jewellery, as her fingers are bejewelled with metal rings. Tara is head-to-toe in vintage treasures and at 14 years old she's already mastered the guitar!

The 60s is embraced by as Yakimo Kan wears an a line shift dress with the classic futuristic prints using patent white accessories and a striped dress. Yakimo absolutely loves vintage as she admires styles from the 50s-70s!

Claire Harris wraps up warm in this lovely fur coat from the Vintage Fair, she also tells us when she goes to gigs, she loves to 'rock out'.

Julianne Smitt wear this simple cotton dress to transfer summer vintage florals into winter. She was happily surprised by English vintage as Julianne is here on an exchange. She may look sweet but Jullianne plays the drums.

Olivia Rocky throws on this 80s graphic patterned cardigan to complete the vintage look. The knitted floral design has muted colours but a striking style, jazzing up any outfit.

Chiara De Vita tried on the fur coat from The Vintage Fair, the fur was real which created an interesting buying debate, as Chiara wasn't sure whether she could buy the beautiful real fur coat. We're undecided too as the luxurious vintage fur adds elegance and grace to her outfit. We think if it's Vintage then buy it, you may as well make the best of the real fur that's out there!

Rhian Morgans not only bought clothes from the Vintage Fair but the yummy and intricately decorated Carousel Cupcakes! She shows her sweet side through bright and sugary florals, telling us in she's crazy about collecting records!

The Brighton Vintage Fair!

At the weekend we visited the immensely cool sea side town of Brighton! We had such a great time seeing all the sights - but most of all The Vintage Fair - Oh the fair! - made the weekend just smashing!

All at just £2 enty (£1 with N.U.S) we can officially say, we are the most affordable vintage fair in Brighton! The day is definitely worth the pennies!
The venue was the Sallis Benney Theatre, on Grand Parade, a nice central location, which made the commute very pleasant for all of you hungry vintage lovers! We were split into two main areas, the main theater and the cafe area. Stalls were found all around bulging with treasures! We had stalls that took over the main stage, all along the railings and plenty of stalls in the main square which sat in the middle, accessible from either side of the walkways down a few steps. like a pool of vintage!
The cafe held even more stalls selling vintage fashion at very reasonable prices, as well as the amazing cupcakes from The Cupcake Mistress - I was lucky enough to try an earl grey cupcake and my. oh. my. It was good!
We also had vintage home wares, and some cracking music from the Meerkuts.
the beautiful vintage fashions from our wonderful stall holders (who always deliver the best vintage and handmade goodies at our very welcoming vintage fairs), included fashion from the 1950's all the way up to the 1980's - something to suit everyone! There is always a treasure to be found, or a hidden gem to make you stand out from the crowd.We had everything you could wish for from a vintage fair!
The atmosphere was fantastic, and we hope all who attended ( over 1000 of you! ) enjoyed yourselves as much as we did.
Don't worry if you missed out on this one, we will be back in Brighton in early 2011 for more! keep an eye out and we will keep you posted ;)

The Sheffield Vintage Fair

This Saturday saw us move from our usual Sheffield spot of The Basement to the bigger and better location of The Circle next to Bungalows and Bears. The spacious venue meant we were able to offer more affordable vintage fashion than ever before and the place literally sang with the anticipation of excited buyers. Here are some of our pics...

Amongst the local stalls, ‘Alice takes a trip’ offered re-worked clothing with a twist, featuring on-season trends with big, flouncy bows and cute animal prints. A personal favourite was this kitsch terrier tote. Reduced to £14 for the fair, this bag would make the perfect companion for a hard days shopping.

Also on the stall was this adorable tee, again reduced especially for the occasion, ideal with faded denim shorts and a pair of battered leather brogues.

A new addition to the fair was the gorgeous vintage hair salon, where customers could take a moment to relax whilst having their hair teased into glamorous 40’s waves and curls with the help of real vintage products.

The fair also featured a vintage tea-party, complete with dainty china cups and saucers and the usual dizzying array of cupcake flavours which sold out in the first few hours!

Many thanks to those who attended the fair, we enjoyed it immensely and look forward to the next one!

The Nottingham Vintage Fair - The People

Throughout our day at Spanky Van Dykes, at our 'Get Snapped' style station we captured a range of different people for The Vintage Fair blog in all the glory of their newly bought items.

Chloe Smedley wears a white 1970s blouse bought from the Vintage Fair, she also bought a leather jacket and loves fashionstrand.

Colin Bickforth uses a masculine tailored vintage bought jacket over a Baroque patterned shirt.

Zoe Murtagh was very excited at the prospect of buying this luxurious winter vintage coat to shelter her from the cold months ahead. Also to keep winter a bit sweeter Zoe told us she makes good cupcakes!

Tom Howells, a dancer at university, creates a laid back cool look with this vintage checked farmer shirt.

Ruby Robinson-Carver ceased the opportunity to hunt down best buys that could create a whole new wardrobe, as she bought 2 pairs of trousers, a glittery top, a top and a jumper! Not only can she shop but it was cool that Ruby could also speak Russian.

William Larkin isn't fazed by larger sizes in vintage but uses them to his advantage to create a quirky style. He feels his hair is his main feature and loves the fact its grey at only 18 year old.

Jo Blakeway wears a pretty vintage dress teamed with yellow shoes and accessories to create a playful summer style. She tells us that she has bought 2 dresses and plays basketball in her spare time.

Abi Colgan wears this lovely vintage crisp shirt, and shows her happiness with her purchases through the photo above. We believe it's a thumbs up.

Fran Hess creates an old school preppy style with a red cheerleader-style dress!

Sam Stockman, throws on this vintage farmer coat to give the look of a countryman proud of his British heritage.

An Italian, Bella Wells who wears vintage fur coat and blouse bought from the fair claims "VINTAGE 'AS IT" and we agree if you look like Bella.

Billie Turner adds a glittery vintage shoulder bag to her collection of clothes, to glam up any outfit.

Jenny Adams aspires to be an opera singer but meanwhile she focuses on keeping her style classic and chic by buying a vintage black briefcase and flower printed skirt.

This Black halterneck dress displays a vintage take on an evening style. Katherine Haworth explains she has the best and most patient friends in the world.

A style winner of the channel 4 programme 'Frock Me', showcased what she was wearing and came along to her Nottingham roots to see what treasures she could find.

Up and coming musician, Tom Wardle, came straight to the Vintage Fair after playing a gig, he shows us his newly bought 'N' tote bag by Kitsch, the cute vintage store in Nottingham.

The Vintage Fair does Offset Festival

The Vintage Fair hit Offset Festival this summer, providing festival goers with a perfect combination of music and fashion. Set in the enchanting grounds of Hainault Forest on the outskirts of London and featuring music from Esben and The Witch, These New Puritans, Mount Kimbie and Caribou, the festival served as the ultimate summer soundtrack to the fair. Even the rain held out for us, although the infrequent bursts of sunshine were more than compensated for by your beautifully dressed selves...

The stalls at the fair did not disappoint in delivering you the very best in vintage fashion at affordable prices. We spotted...

Cream oversized chunky-knits for a mere £10

Quirky 80’s jumpers- so irresistible that I spied this being worn straight after purchase.

Beautifully tailored vintage dresses encapsulating the current under-wear as outer-wear trend

As usual, the bargain bins were out in full force, offering anything from chunky sweats to tasselled leather bags. A fair find was this stunning dress, matching the classic Audrey Hepburn-style shape with shoulder pads and sequins to create the ultimate in vintage glamour.

Another fair find and personal favourite were these patterned high-waisted trousers, a bargain at £15 and perfect festival wear with a pair of leather brogues and a vintage tee.

Offset provided The Vintage Fair with our festival debut and it is one we are eager to repeat. Thankyou to everyone who shared this experience with us- we hope to share it again very soon!

The Vintage Fair Nottingham - The Event

The Vintage Fair came to Nottingham on Saturday the 18th at Spanky Van Dykes, the eatery and funhouse situated close to the Victoria Centre.

The place was packed as people were browsing the rails for the ultimate vintage finds, from grown-up bags to shearling jackets, Vintage seemed the alternative way to shop for the Autumn/Winter trends.

There were more than 15 Vintage stalls stocking hand selected items for the Vintage loving customers, making it easy to find what the happy crowds were looking for. The atmosphere provided the perfect experience as classic old-fashioned tunes from the 1950s were played by the uniquely dressed DJs, who both wore a suit from top to bottom with pocket watches, a giant beard and a shaved head.

After a hard day's shopping, cupcakes were the perfect treat to top the day off, and Spanky's offered reasonably priced delicious food to the array of hungry buyers!

The Vintage Fair takes over The Midlands!

In June, we took The Vintage Fair to the Midlands adding Nottingham to our list of cities. Over 1200 people joined us at Spanky Van Dykes for a fantastic summers day of shopping! It was a brilliant first event and we'll now be holding at least 4 events a year in Notts.

Our next fair takes place on Sat 18th Sept @ Spanky Van Dykes and is FREE ENTRY all day!

We'll be back in Birmingham for freshers week so you can join us in our usual haunt, The Custard Factory (In the big green Old Library) On Saturday 25th September 12pm - 5pm (more details to follow)

Next stop on The Vintage Fair train is LEICESTER. We'll be taking over the Auditorium (Leicester's newest live music venue and former Bingo hall) for a super day of shopping and a cheeky game of Bingo for vintage prizes! Saturday 23rd October, 12pm - 5pm @ The Auditorium, Market Place!

The Birmingham Vintage Fair - Sat 21st Nov @ The Custard Factory

Yesterday saw The Vintage Fair's first Birmingham fair at the wonderful Custard Factory.
We had an absolutely amazing day, not even the torrential rain could keep the Brummies from the call of vintage and cupcakes! Around 900 drenched shoppers came into our inviting fair to cosy up in the tea party with a nice brew and some delicious cupcakes. There were bargains to be had all day from one of the 40 great traders we had on offer selling all the festive favourites including eye popping Christmas jumpers & sequins galore!
One particular Ralph Lauren jumper (below) caused quite a stir among customers and stall holders alike but eventually landed in the hands of Maryam from Top Banana much to the envy of everyone else.
The Birmingham Vintage Fair will return in Spring 2010 but keep your ears to the ground about our January Sales Fair
